SCHOOL OF GRACE OF CANEILLE

PURPOSE OF THE SCHOOL
School of Grace of Caneille opened with grades one through three in September of 2006. The purpose of the school is to provide free education for those who formerly had no opportunity to attend school.  The plan is to add one additional grade each year until the completion of primary education. Annual enrollment has been over 100 students each year since the school opened. Education is a major means of overcoming the extreme cycle of poverty.

Statistical illiteracy rates for Haiti vary from 45-80%. The rural areas have a much higher illiteracy rate due to the lack of adequate educational facilities and qualified teachers who would desire to live and/or teach in the countryside.  Parents do not have adequate funds to send children to the few schools that may be offered. It is rare for children to complete high school education.  The majority of parents in the Caneille area are illiterate.

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
Classes presently meet in an open air structure of a metal sheet roof held up by wooden posts, the same structure used for Sunday church services. Blue tarps are hung between each class for dividers. In January of 2009, construction began of one classroom. Classrooms are badly needed to meet the growing needs of the school.

Meals at school are provided for the children dependent on donations received. Teachers report increased attention spans and focus on subject matter when meals are provided.  Food provides increased learning as well as overall growth in development.

Some of the subjects taught are French, Creole, grammar, math, spelling, reading, writing, science, history, geography, and Bible.
